UK’s Chippenham Auctions to offer 18th-century glass bottles Nov. 10

CHIPPENHAM, England – An extensive collection of rare 18th-century green glass bottles is expected to make over £2,000 (US$3,200) when it crosses the auction block at Chippenham Auction Rooms on Saturday, Nov. 10. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide the Internet live-bidding services.

More than 30 lots of glass have come in from a private source for the Nov. 10 sale. They include desirable mallet and onion shapes. Also among the various examples consigned to the event are wine and gin bottles, an ink bottle shaped like a house, and a Hardens hand-grenade-shape fire extinguisher bottle.

“One wine bottle has a lustrous sheen to it,” said auctioneer Gordon Brockman. “It is one of the bottles that’s onion shaped, and it could be worth as much as £900.”

Other items of interest in the sale include Lot 26, a pair of 19th-century parianware figures stamped ‘IRELAND’ and ‘ENGLAND’ on the base and ‘Josiah Wedgwood and Sons Published Jan Y 20 1859 and Feb Y 2 1859’ on the back. These are valued at £80-£120, while a pair of Vaseline salts are in at £60-£80.

Also included is pair of bronze recumbent lions on a marble plinth. These stunning animal figures carry a moderate estimate of £80-£120.
